  AN ALLENTOWN MAN IS FACING NUMEROUS CHARGES AFTER HE TRIED, BUT FAILED, TO SHOOT POLICE OFFICERS OVER THE WEEKEND.  POLICE RESPONDED TO REPORTS OF A ROBBERY IN PROGRESS IN THE 500 BLOCK OF 5TH STREET SATURDAY AFTERNOON.  POLICE SAY THEY FOUND THEIR SUSPECT, 25-YEAR-OLD SHEKIR THOMAS, NOT FAR FROM THE SITE OF THE BURGLARY.  THAT'S WHEN THOMAS ALLEGEDLY POINTED A GUN AT THEM AND PULLED THE TRIGGER, BUT THE GUN DIDN'T FIRE.


  A SUNDAY NIGHT FIRE HAS DESTROYED A FORKS TOWNSHIP HOME UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND DAMAGED FOUR OCCUPIED HOUSES.  THE FIRE BEGAN AROUND 10 O'CLOCK SUNDAY NIGHT IN THE 1100 BLOCK OF SPRING LANE AND QUICKLY SPREAD TO A NEIGHBORING HOME.  THE HEAT FROM TEH FIRE MELTED SIDING AND CRACKED WINDOWS ON THREE OTHER HOUSES.  NOBODY WAS HURT IN THE FIRE, WHICH IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.


  PENNDOT SAYS WORK BEGINS TUESDAY ON A BRIDGE OVER THE JORDAN CREEK IN SOUTH WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP AND THAT MEANS CEDAR CREST BOULEVARD WILL BE CLOSED BETWEEN RITTER AND IRON BRIDGE ROADS FOR UNTIL AUGUST 7.  TRAFFIC IN THE AREA WILL BE DETOURED ONTO WALBERT AVENUE, ROUTE 309 AND OREFIELD ROAD.  THE BRIDGE WAS BUILT IN 1957 AND LAST REHABILITATED IN 1976.


  A 65-YEAR-OLD MAN'S BODY HAS BEEN DISCOVERED IN THE CHARRED REMAINS OF HIS SCHUYLKILL COUNTY HOME.  STATE POLICE SAY RICHARD DERMO DIED WHEN HIS CASS TOWNSHIP HOME BURNED EARLY SUNDAY MORNING.  EIGHT FIRE COMPANIES WERE CALLED IN TO BATTLE THE FIRE.  NEIGHBORS SAY THEY TRIED TO GET INTO THE HOME TO RESCUE DERMO, BUT COULDN'T.  INVESTIGATORS SAY THERE WERE NO SMOKE DETECTORS INSIDE THE HOUSE.


  PHILADELPHIA MAYOR MICHAEL NUTTER SAYS HE FELLS "A GREAT PAIN" OVER THE DEATHS OF FOUR CHILDREN IN A FIRE.  THE FOUR WERE KILLED SATURDAY NIGHT IN THE FIRE THAT DESTROYED AT LEAST EIGHT HOMES.  NUTTER SAYS "WE LOST FOUR PRECIOUS LIVES, FOUR LITTLE INNOCENT CHILDREN."  HE CALLS THE FIRE "A HORRIFIC TRAGEDY."


  THE CIVIL WAR IS STILL ALIVE IN GETTYSBURG.  THE ANNUAL RE-ENACTMENT OF THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG BROUGHT OUT CURIOUS HISTORY FANS SUNDAY.  THE EVENT INCLUDED A LIVING HISTORY CAMP AND WEAPONS DEMONSTRATION.  THE REAL BATTLE DURING THE CIVIL WAR WAS FOUGHT FROM JULY 1 TO 3 IN 1863.
