  AUTHORITIES SAY MOMENTS AFTER A PILOT WARNED AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS HE WAS LOSING ALTITUDE, HIS HELICOPTER CRASHED IN A WOODED AREA OF NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA, KILLING FIVE PEOPLE INCLUDING A CHILD.  THE WYOMING COUNTY CORONER SAYS THE PILOT CONTACTED A NEARBY TOWER AROUND 10:30 P.M. SATURDAY SAYING HE WOULD ATTEMPT TO RETURN TO ANOTHER AIRFIELD NEARBY. THEN HE WENT OFF THE AIR.  THE WRECKAGE WAS FOUND SUNDAY AFTERNOON.  OFFICIALS HAVE NOT RELEASED THE NAMES AND AGES OF THE VICTIMS, BUT THE CORONER SAYS THERE WERE THREE MEN, A WOMAN AND A CHILD ON BOARD.  THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION SAID THE HELICOPTER TOOK OFF FROM GREATER BINGHAMTON AIRPORT IN NEW YORK BUT OFFICIALS THERE SAID IT ACTUALLY ORIGINATED AT A SMALLER AIRFIELD NEARBY, TRI CITIES AIRPORT IN ENDICOTT.

  PHILADELPHIA HAS SET A NEW RECORD FOR ONE-DAY RAINFALL AS STRONG STORMS ROLLED THROUGH THE REGION.  THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAYS 8.02 INCHES OF RAIN FELL IN THE CITY SUNDAY, SHATTERING THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 6.63 INCHES SET DURING TROPICAL STORM FLOYD ON SEPT. 16, 1999.  HEAVY RAINS CAUSE FLASH FLOODING, POWER OUTAGES AND AIRPORT DELAYS.  A SPOKESWOMAN FOR PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SAYS SOME SECTIONS OF TERMINAL A LOST POWER FOR A FEW HOURS DUE TO THE STORMS AND BACKUP GENERATORS FAILED.  FLIGHTS WERE DELAYED, BUT THE SPOKESWOMAN SAYS ALL OF THE RUNWAYS REMAINED OPEN DURING THE OUTAGE.  THE SOAKING RAINS ALSO FLOODED AREA ROADS AND CAUSED TRAFFIC HEADACHES.

  A MAN WORKING FOR ASPLUNDH TREE EXPERTS HAS DIED ON THE JOB.  A 42-YEAR-OLD OREFIELD MAN IS DEAD AFTER COMING INTO CONTACT WITH A POWER LINE WHILE TRIMMING TREES IN BETHLEHEM OVER THE WEEKEND.  THE NORTHAMPTON COUNTY CORONER SAYS ROBERT ROGERS III WAS KILLED SATURDAY WHEN HE CONTACTED A POWER LINE WHILE CLEARING TREES FROM THOSE LINES NEAR THE EASTERN END OF SAND ISLAND AT THE MINSI TRAIL BRIDGE.  ROGERS WAS DOING CONTRACT WORK FOR PPL IN PREPARATION FOR MUSIKFEST.  OSHA IS INVESTIGATING THE ACCIDENT.

  STATE POLICE ARE ASKING FOR HELP TO IDENTIFY THE BODY FOUND INSIDE A BADLY BURNED CAR ON ROUTE 209 IN MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY.  THE CAR WAS FOUND JUST BEFORE 2 O'CLOCK SATURDAY MORNING IN THE SOUTHBOUND LANE OF ROUTE 209 ABOUT 10 MILES NORTHEAST OF STROUDSBURG.  STATE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING.

  A SUBURBAN PHILADELPHIA WOMAN WHO TIED THE KNOT WITH HER LONGTIME PARTNER AFTER BEING GRANTED A COUNTY MARRIAGE LICENSE DESPITE PENNSYLVANIA'S BAN ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE SAYS "THIS IS A DAY THAT EVERY COMMITTED COUPLE WAITS FOR."  THIRTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD DEE SPAGNUOLO AND 38-YEAR-OLD SASHA BALLEN WERE MARRIED SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT THEIR WYNNEWOOD HOME, WITH THEIR THREE YOUNG CHILDREN PLAYING ROLES IN THE HASTILY ARRANGED CEREMONY.  THE TWO MET IN COLLEGE AND HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR 17 YEARS.  THEIRS WAS ONE OF A NUMBER OF LICENSES ISSUED LAST WEEK BY MONTGOMERY COUNTY OFFICIALS.  ANOTHER COUPLE MARRIED LAST WEEK.  SPAGNUOLO SAID THE DECISION TO MARRY WASN'T MEANT AS A POLITICAL STATEMENT BUT WAS "PURELY OUT OF LOVE."  BUT SHE SAID SHE THINKS APPROVAL OF GAY MARRIAGE HAS ALREADY REACHED A "TIPPING POINT" IN THE COMMONWEALTH DESPITE THE BAN.

  EARLIER THIS MONTH, THE PENNSYLVANIA LOTTERY ANNOUNCED ALL-TIME RECORD SALES IN THE PAST FISCAL YEAR.  DEMOCRATIC STATE SENATOR MATT SMITH SAYS THE GOVERNOR NEEDS TO LOOK AT THOSE NUMBERS AND RE-THINK HIS PLANS.  "I REALLY THINK IT'S TIME THAT THE GOVERNOR GIVE UP THE IDEA OF PRIVATIZING THE PENNSYLVANIA LOTTERY," SMITH SAYS.  SMITH IS ON THE SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE, WHICH OVERSEES THE LOTTERY.  IN THE JUST-COMPLETED FISCAL YEAR, THE LOTTERY SAW $3.69 BILLION IN SALES AND $1 BILLION IN REVENUES.

  KENTUCKY SEN. RAND PAUL IS HITTING BACK AT NEW JERSEY GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE IN THE TWO REPUBLICANS' ONGOING SPAT OVER NATIONAL SECURITY.  CHRISTIE LAST WEEK CRITICIZED PAUL'S OPPOSITION TO WARRANTLESS FEDERAL SURVEILLANCE PROGRAMS AS HARMING EFFORTS TO PREVENT TERRORISM.  PAUL WAS AT A FUNDRAISER OUTSIDE NASHVILLE ON SUNDAY. HE ARGUED CHRISTIE'S POSITION HURTS GOP CHANCES IN NATIONAL ELECTIONS, AND THAT SPENDING PRIORITIES OF CRITICS LIKE THE GOVERNOR AND REP. PETER KING OF NEW YORK DO MORE TO HARM NATIONAL SECURITY.  PAUL SAID A "GIMME, GIMME, GIMME _ GIVE ME ALL MY SANDY MONEY NOW" ATTITUDE AFTER THE HURRICANE ILLUSTRATE HIS CRITICS' MISPLACED SPENDING PRIORITIES.  AS FOR THE BACK-AND-FORTH BETWEEN CHRISTIE AND PAUL, THE SENATOR SAID HE DIDN'T START THE SQUABBLE, BUT HE'S WILLING TO FIGHT BACK "IN SPADES."

  SIX-TIME PRO BOWL QUARTERBACK DONOVAN MCNABB WILL OFFICIALLY RETIRE A MEMBER OF THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES TODAY.  MCNABB PLAYED 11 OF HIS 13 SEASONS WITH THE EAGLES, LEADING THEM TO EIGHT PLAYOFF APPEARANCES, FIVE NFC EAST TITLES, FIVE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES AND ONE SUPER BOWL LOSS.  THE 36-YEAR-OLD MCNABB HASN'T PLAYED IN THE NFL SINCE 2011.  HE WAS TRADED TO WASHINGTON IN 2010, STARTED 13 GAMES FOR THE REDSKINS THAT SEASON AND SIX FOR MINNESOTA THE FOLLOWING YEAR.  MCNABB IS THE EAGLES' LEADER IN MAY PASSING CATEGORIES, INCLUDING ATTEMPTS (4,746), COMPLETIONS (2,801), YARDS (32,873), AND TOUCHDOWNS (216).  HE LED THE TEAM TO 100 WINS, INCLUDING NINE IN THE PLAYOFFS.
