LOCAL NEWS FOR SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2013

THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF LAFAYETTE BANK IS ACCUSED OF RUNNING A BOGUS INVESTMENT BUSINESS SIMILAR TO A PONZI SCHEME AND RIPPING OFF 82 VICTIMS SINCE STARTING THE SCHEME 15 YEARS AGO.  NORTHAMPTON COUNTY D.A. JOHN MORGANELLI SAYS A GRAND JURY INVESTIGATION PROMPTED THE CHARGES AGAINST 67-YEAR-OLD RICHARD FREER, WHO WAS ARRESTED FRIDAY MORNING AT HIS PALMER TOWNSHIP HOME.  MORGANELLI SAYS FREER SCAMMED HIS VICTIMS OUT OF ABOUT $10 MILLION IN WHICH MORGANELLI CALLS ONE OF THE MOST OUTRAGEOUS CASES HE'S SEEN OF THEFT."  THE D.A. SAYS FREER'S WIFE IS ALSO BEING INVESTIGATED.

THE ANNUAL ORAL CANCER FOUNDATION WALK FOR AWARENESS IS THIS MORNING AT THE BETHLEHEM TOWNSHIP MUNICIPAL PARK.  EVA GRAYZEL IS AN ORAL CANCER SURVIVOR AND SAYS SATURDAY IS ABOUT MORE FOR A WALK ON A PLEASANT AUTUMN DAY.  "WE OFFER A FREE ORAL CANCER SCREENING TO EVERY PARTICIPANT.  IT'S NOT JUST ANY OLD SCREENING.  IT'S A REALLY THOROUGH SCREENING WHERE WE EDUCATE YOU ABOUT ALL THE SIGNS DENTISTS ARE LOOKING FOR WHEN THEY DO A SCREENING," GRAYZEL SAYS.  REGISTRATION BEGINS AT 9 O'CLOCK.  THE WALK BEGINS AT 11 O'CLOCK.

IF YOU WANT A LITTLE LEARNING, A LITTLE CULTURE AND SOME FUN, SATURDAY WOULD BE AN IDEAL DAY TO VISIT ONE OF 10 LOCAL MUSEUMS, INCLUDING THE AMERICA ON WHEELS MUSEUM IN ALLENTOWN.  EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LINDA MERKEL SAYS FREE ADMISSION FOR TWO IS ONLY A COUPLE MOUSE CLICKS AWAY.  "YOU DO HAVE TO HAVE A COUPON IN ORDER TO COME INTO ANY OF THE MUSEUM'S PARTICIPATING," MERKEL SAYS.  THAT COUPON IS AVAILABLE AT WWW.SMITHSONIAN.COM.  THE OTHER NINE LOCAL MUSEUMS OFFERING FREE ADMISSION ON SATURDAY ARE THE ALLENTOWN ART MUSEUM, THE SIGAL MUSEUM, THE KEMERER MUSEUM, THE 1758 MORAVIAN SUNN INN, 1750 SMITHY, THE MORAVIAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, THE LEHIGH VALLEY HERITAGE MUSEUM, THE MORAVIAN MUSEUM AND THE 1810 GOUNDIE HOUSE.

RECORDINGS OF 911 CALLS SHOW CITIZENS FRANTICALLY TRIED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE THAT DESTROYED MORE THAN 50 BUSINESSES ON A NEW JERSEY BOARDWALK.  A CALLER TELLS A POLICE DISPATCHER THAT PEOPLE HAVE A HOSE ON THE FIRE, BUT "IT'S GOING FROM NOTHING TO SOMETHING."  ANOTHER CALLER SAID SMOKE WAS RISING OUT OF THE SEASIDE PARK BOARDWALK AND "EVERYBODY'S LIKE TRYING TO THROW WATER ON IT."  DISPATCHERS TOLD CALLERS THAT FIREFIGHTERS WERE ON THE WAY AND WARNED THE CALLERS TO STAY AWAY FROM THE FIRE.  WIND-WHIPPED FLAMES SPREAD THE BLAZE ALONG THE BOARDS TO SEASIDE HEIGHTS ON SEPTEMBER 12.  OFFICIALS BLAMED THE CAUSE ON OLD WIRING THAT HAD BEEN COMPROMISED BY SALTWATER AND SAND DURING SUPERSTORM SANDY.

REPUBLICAN LEADERS LIKE THEIR CHANCES OF PICKING UP SEATS IN THE LEGISLATURE WITH GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE AT THE TOP OF THE TICKET.  BUT A LEADING DEMOCRAT SAYS, DON'T COUNT ON IT.  ALL 120 SEATS ARE UP ON NOVEMBER 5 ALONG WITH THE GOVERNOR.  BOTH HOUSES ARE CONTROLLED BY DEMOCRATS.  DISTRICT MAPS FAVOR INCUMBENTS, LESSENING THE CHANCES OF CHRISTIE'S COATTAILS ON LEGISLATIVE RACES.  NEW JERSEY HAS 700,000 MORE REGISTERED DEMOCRATS THAN REPUBLICANS, INCREASING THE ODDS OF THE LEGISLATURE REMAINING IN DEMOCRATS' HANDS.  REPUBLICAN LEADERS TOM KEAN JR. IN THE SENATE AND JON BRAMNICK IN THE ASSEMBLY SAY THE GOP WILL BE COMPETITIVE IN EVERY DISTRICT THAT WAS CLOSE IN THE LAST ELECTION.  BUT ASSEMBLY DEMOCRATIC LEADER LOU GREENWALD SAYS ALL DEMOCRATIC INCUMBENTS ARE LIKELY TO WIN.

THE EAGLES HAVE THEIR WORK CUT OUT FOR THEM SUNDAY AFTERNOON WHEN THEY VISIT DENVER AND PEYTON MANNING.  COACH CHIP KELLY SAYS TRYING TO KEEP THE BRONCOS' QUARTERBACK IN CHECK IS A HUGE CHALLENGE.  "YOU JUST CAN'T DO ONE THING AGAINST HIM.  HE'S JUST SUCH A GREAT MIND AT THE QUARTERBACK POSITION THAT IF YOU BEAT HIM ONE TIME ON THE BLITZ HE'S GOING TO COME BACK AND BEAT YOU ON THE NEXT BLITZ.  YOU'VE GOTTA TRY TO GIVE HIM DIFFERENT LOOKS," KELLY SAYS.  MANNING HAS STARTED THE SEASON WITH 12 TOUCHDOWNS AND NO INTERCEPTIONS IN LEADING THE BRONCOS TO A 3-AND-0 RECORD.  THE EAGLES ARE 1-AND-2 AND HAVE LOST TWO STRAIGHT.
