  THE HOUSE HAS VOTED TO CONTINUE THE COLLECTION OF HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF AMERICANS' PHONE RECORDS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM.  THE HOUSE REJECTED A MEASURE TO END THE PROGRAM'S AUTHORITY.  THE VOTE WAS 217-205 ON WEDNESDAY.  LEHIGH VALLEY'S CONGRESSMEN WERE ON DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE ISSUE.  REPUBLICAN CHARLIE DENT VOTED AGAINST THE MEASURE TO KILL OFF THE PROGRAM.  DEMOCRAT MATT CARTWRIGHT VOTED TO END THE PROGRAM.  THE MEASURE, IF APPROVED BY THE FULL HOUSE AND SENATE AND SIGNED BY THE PRESIDENT, WOULD HAVE ENDED THE PROGRAM'S STATUTORY AUTHORITY.

  A FORMER PUBLIC DEFENDER WHO AUTHORITIES SAID EMBEZZLED MORE THAN $210,000 FROM FORMERS CLIENTS HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO ONE TO TWO YEARS IN PRISON.  51-YEAR-OLD ANTHONY MARTINO OF ROSETO TEARFULLY APOLOGIZED WEDNESDAY IN NORTHAMPTON COUNTY COURT TO HIS FAMILY, SUPPORTERS AND THE COMMUNITY FOR HIS ACTIONS.  HE SAID HE GOT INTO TAX TROUBLE AND RAN UP GAMBLING DEBTS AND THEN "TOOK THE EASY WAY.  THE WRONG WAY."  PROSECUTORS SAID HE DRAINED THE ACCOUNT OF AN ESTATE HE WAS ADMINISTERING AND THEN STOLE FROM OTHER CLIENTS TO REPLACE THE MONEY.

  AN ALLENTOWN RESTAURANT THAT CLOSED FRIDAY WILL NOT BE VACANT VERY LONG.  THE OWNER OF BILLY'S DOWNTOWN DINER IN BETHLEHEM SAYS HE'S OPENING A SECOND RESTAURANT WITH THE SAME NAME IN THE BUTZ  CORPORATE CENTER AT NINTH AND HAMILTON STREETS.  BILLY KOUNOUPIS EXPECTS HIS NEW DINER TO OPEN AT THE FORMER SANGRIA RESTAURANT SOMETIME IN SEPTEMBER. 

  POLICE IN EASTON ARE INVESTIGATING AN EARLY MORNING SHOOTING.  WE'RE TOLD THE SHOOTING HAPPENED AROUND 4:30 THIS MORNING IN 700 BLOCK OF FERRY STREET.  THERE'S NO WORD YET ON HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE SHOT OR IF ANYBODY HAS BEEN ARRESTED.

  48-YEAR-OLD LISA MARIE GUTH HAS BEEN ARRAIGNED ON CHARGES SHE STOLE AT LEAST $2600 WORTH OF SEWAGE SERVICE PAYMENTS.  POLICE SAY THE WILLIAMS TOWNSHIP WOMAN ADMITTED TO STEALING THE MONEY AND USING THE CASH ON EVERYTHING FROM BUYING FOOD TO MAKING HER MORTGAGE PAYMENTS.  SHE FACES TWO DIFFERENT CHARGES, EACH OF WHICH CALLS FOR A MAXIMUM SENTENCE OF SEVEN YEARS IN JAIL.

  FIVE SAME-SEX COUPLES HAVE OBTAINED MARRIAGE LICENSES IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, WHICH IS DEFYING A STATE BAN ON SUCH UNIONS.  ALICIA TERRIZZI AND LOREEN BLOODGOOD WERE THE ONLY ONES TO MARRY WEDNESDAY.  THE POTTSTOWN COUPLE SAYS THEY DIDN'T SET OUT TO BE PIONEERS, BUT WANTED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITY OFFERED BY MONTGOMERY COUNTY.  RETIRED MARKETING EXECUTIVE ELLEN TOPLIN AND LONG-TIME PARTNER CHARLENE KURLAND WILL MARRY AFTER 22 YEARS TOGETHER.  KURLAND SAYS SHE PREVIOUSLY MARRIED A MAN BECAUSE SHE HAD NO OTHER OPTIONS.  IN OTHER STATES WITH SAME-SEX MARRIAGE BANS, LICENSES ISSUED BY DEFIANT LOCAL OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN VOIDED BY COURTS.  DEMOCRATIC COUNTY COMMISSION CHAIRMAN JOSH SHAPIRO SAYS MARRIAGE EQUALITY WILL COME TO PENNSYLVANIA SOONER OR LATER.  A SPOKESMAN FOR REPUBLICAN GOV. TOM CORBETT, WHO OPPOSES SAME-SEX MARRIAGE, SAID LOCAL OFFICIALS DON'T HAVE THE POWER TO SUSPEND STATE LAW.

  THE PLAINTIFFS IN A TRIAL OF PENNSYLVANIA'S VOTER-IDENTIFICATION LAW ARE REFUSING TO REST THEIR CASE UNTIL THEY LEARN MORE ABOUT ANY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS IN ISSUING THE MANDATORY PHOTO ID CARDS.  COMMONWEALTH COURT JUDGE BERNARD MCGINLEY CLEARED THE COURTROOM BRIEFLY WEDNESDAY TO HUDDLE WITH LAWYERS FROM BOTH SIDES, BUT THERE WAS NO SIGN OF A COMPROMISE AS THE COURT RECESSED.  AT ISSUE ARE ABOUT 500 VOTERS WHO WERE TURNED DOWN FOR A DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ID CARD LAST YEAR.   PLAINTIFFS SAY MORE THAN 100 OF THEM ARE REGISTERED VOTERS WHO THEN APPLIED FOR A SPECIAL VOTING-ONLY ID CARD BEFORE THE 2012 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, BUT DIDN'T RECEIVE THEM IN TIME.  STATE OFFICIALS SAY THE LAW WASN'T BEING ENFORCED AND THAT MOST OF THE 500 HAVE RECEIVED ONE CARD OR THE OTHER.

  VETERANS LOOKING FOR WORK MIGHT WANT TO TAKE A DRIVE TO PHILADELPHIA AND LINCOLN FINANCIAL FIELD THURSDAY FOR A VETERANS JOB FAIR.  JOHN LUNDEBERG IS THE EVENT’S DIRECTOR.  "BRING ABOUT 50 RESUMES AND COME DRESSED LIKE YOU'RE HAVING AN INTERVIEW BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO BE TALKING FACE-TO-FACE WITH PEOPLE LOOKING TO HIRE VETERANS," LUNDEBERG SAYS.  AT LEAST 43 EMPLOYERS WILL BE AT THE JOB FAIR THURSDAY FROM 11 TO 3.

  OFFICIALS HAVE MADE PERMANENT AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM THAT TARGETS TOLL CHEATS ON THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE AND GARDEN STATE PARKWAY.  THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE AUTHORITY JOINED FORCES WITH THE MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSION LAST YEAR TO SUSPEND THE REGISTRATION OF ANY DRIVER WHO OWES $1,000 OR MORE IN UNPAID TOLLS.  THE AUTHORITY HAS COLLECTED $200,000 IN BACK TOLLS AND FINES AND HAS AGREEMENTS PENDING TO RECEIVE AN ADDITIONAL $450,000 FROM 300 SCOFFLAWS.  UNDER THE AGREEMENT APPROVED WEDNESDAY, THE AGENCY WOULD LOWER THE THRESHOLD OF UNPAID TOLLS AND FINES BELOW $1,000 TO "ANY SIGNIFICANT SUM."  THE AUTHORITY HAS REIMBURSED THE MVC $14,400 UNDER THE PILOT PROGRAM.  THE LATEST AGREEMENT WOULD CAP THE ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS AT $50,000 A YEAR.
